THE House of Commons last week approved the Motor Vehicles (Variation of Speed Limit) Regulations, 1955. These grant exemption from speed limits outside built-up areas to vehicles of the Land-Rover type if they conform to certain requirements and are not drawing trailers.

To. qualify for exemption, vehicles must not weigh more than 2 tons unladen and the seating capacity must not exceed seven, in addition to the driver. Unless it has four-wheel drive, the vehicle must be permanently fitted with a rigid roof, which may incorporate a sliding panel, and must have at least one row of transverse fixed or folding seats for two or more passengers.

The seats must be properly sprung or cushioned and have upholstered back rests. There must be windows of a specified Minimum area on each side and at the rear: MIRRORS ADJUSTED FROM CAB

ADRIVING mirror which can be controlled for position from the driving seat has been patented by Mr. C. W. Blankley, proprietor of the Gem Service Station, Colsterworth by-pass, near Grantham. The mirror is mounted on an arm which is held in a ball-andsocket joint.

Adjustment is by cables which run to a control unit mounted in the cab. Each mirror can be operated independently, the mounting allowing a swinging movement in a horizontal plane and an oseil.: lating one on a vertical axis.
