A DISPUTE on salaries and condi ti of service for white-collar workers employed by Southdown Motor Services; Ltd., has been reported to the Minister of Labour by the Transport and General WOrkers' Union.

It arises out of an application made earlier this year for higher pay and improved •conditions of employment. A maximum rate of £730 a year was then sought. . •

BUSMEN'S PAY SETTLEMENTS TODAY?

ASETTLEMENT of the pay claim for workers employed by "provincial bus companies is to be announced today by the National Council for the -. Omnibus Industry. Details of the settlement, which was recommended to both sides/of the council by an arbitration hoard, were not available when The Commercial Motor closed for press. The Commercial Motor was told on Monday that alleged details of the arbitration board's -findings published in certain newspapers were incorrect.

Agreement on municipal bus workers' pay is also expected to be reached today by the National Joint Industrial Council for the Industry.

As a result of the pay settlement, Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd., are expected to make an early application for higher fares.

Some 3,500 bus workers employed by the Ulster Transport Authority are now seeking a "substantial increase" in wages.

WORLD MOTORWAY TALKS IN LONDON

AN.international conference on. urban motorways will be convened in London from September 17-20 next year by the British Road Federation. Invitations have gone to 35 countries aril, to nearly 500 civic authorities in Britain. Eminent European and American experts will present papers dealing with aspects of urban motorway design and construction.

The B.R.F. state: "This will be the first conference of its kind to be held in London, and it will take place with city traffic congestion in an even worse state than it is today."

The Federation have published a pamphlet, "Urban Motorways," which puts the case for such roads as an aid to the relief of city congestion. It is priced at is.
