T"problem of discharging refuse, coke, sand, coal and many other commodities from a body, has been tackled in several different ways. For many years, tipping met most requirements, but the development of special types of body compelled many local authorities to investigate their claimed advantages.

Of these, the Jekta telescopic body, which is made by Walkers and County Cars, Ltd., 166, Weir Road, London, S.W.12, has become particularly popular. Simple in design, with no involved mechanism requiring constant attention, it consists of three sections which are made to telescope into one another through the agency of hydraulic rams. .

The company has made a large number of these bodies since the design was first evolved, but not until recently have large-capacity units been built. The first of these, having a content of 21 cubic yds., has been built to the order of Mr. N. G. Wilson, B.Sc., engineer and manager of Edinburgh Lighting and Cleansing Department.

It is required for carrying screened dust and clinker from •a refuse disposal works. The scupper sections are in

g•-in, and steel plate, with strengthening members at the front edges. The trailing edges of the sections are fitted with soft-steel rubbing strips. Secured at an angle of 45 degrees in the foremost section is a steel plate, the object of which is to ensure that a load is fully discharged without any . need_ for manual labour. This means, of course, that beneath this partition there is space which cannot be used

for carrying the load, but it toms a convenient clearance area for the oil reservoir of the hydraulic system.

The rear door is equipped with six tension springs which serve to raise it when the securing catches are released by means of a remote control. This control is linked up with the discharge lever sothat the body cannot be telescoped withthe door in the closed position.

The accompanying illustration shows the body withbut its outer casing, andwhen finished the roof portion will be • provided with optional openings so that the body can be loaded from a hopper. The basis of this outfit is a LeylandHippo chassis, which becomes Particularly accessible when the body sections are fully telescoped in the dis.. charge position.
