Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A N application by the Scottish Motor PA Traction Co., Ltd., for a licence to run a seven-day tour from Edinburgh to Strathpeffer during the summer was refused, last week, by the Scottish Licensing Authority. The company wished to run the tour direct from

Edinburgh to Strathpeffer, instead of operating it as part of _arrexpress ser

viee from Edinburgh to InVernesS and -then from Inverness to Strathpeffer by arrangernent with Highland Transport.

Ltd. • '

Northern Roadways, Ltd., which runs seven-day tours -from Glasgow and

Edinburgh to Strathpeffer, objected.

When, in 1946, that company applied for a licence for the tours, the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., was among the objectors, and argued that ample facilities existed.

For the S.M.T. it was stated that the tour had been operated by duplicating

vehicles on the express service to Inverness and these duplicates would largely become the touring vehicles if the licence were granted.

For Northern Roadways, Ltd., Mr. James S. Osborne, secretary, said that in 1948 the company carried 725 tourists from Edinburgh. This year's figure was 746. Traffic from Glasgow had, how ever, increased from 1,096 passengers in 1948 to 1,754 in 1949. In Mr. Osborne's opinion, the small increase in traffic from Edinburgh was caused by competition from the S.M.T.

M.P.T.A. CONFERENCE DATES °THE annual conference of the Muni

cipal Passenger Transport Association will take place in Edinburgh from September 26-29 next year. These dates conflict with the Commercial Motor Show, which has provisionally been arranged to be held at Earls Court from September 23-30.

FEAR OF UNEMPLOYMENT

AT a meeting at Middlesbrough, last week, Mr. F. Cousins, national secretary of the road haulage group of the Transport and General Workers' Union, suggested that closer co-ordination of services, which might follow nationalization, would probably call for

fewer vehicles. This might present a problem in maintaining full employment among transport workers.
