Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

R°CITES to be used by coaches passing into or through London on express services or excursions and tours have now been given code letters and numbers. This is part of a scheme prepared by the Metropolitan Licensing Authority to save work and to encourage the use of the less congested roads in and around London.

There are 20 Standard routes for coaches bound to or from London, and seven corridor routes. These have been prepared in conjunction with the Commissioner of Police so as to cover all points of interest in London, whilst avoiding roads carrying heavy traffic.

In future, an operator applying for a road service licence, or for a renewal or modification of an existing licence, will be able to describe his proposed route from the'periphery of the traffic area to his destination simply by quoting the code letter and number, adding named roads where neceSsary to corn

plete the journey. For example, a coach entering the Metropolitan area by the Southend road and proceeding to the Kings Cross district would travel by Route S.R.1 and the Ring Road.

These code numbers will also be used, as far as practicable, in licences and in "Notices and Proceedings."

It is hoped that coaches on private hire will also follow the standard routes as far as possible. The scheme does not apply• to local services or to those operated by London Transport Details, together with a map of the routes, have been published as a supplement to "Notices and Proceedings," No. 516 (Metropolitan Area), and a copy will be supplied to each operator concerned by the appropriate Licensing Authority.

[At the peak period last summer, about 2,000 coaches per day came to London on express services, excursions and tours, and private hire.]
