tions, the question of re-rubbering covers has become of increased importance.to both operator and trader. The experience of 60 years in the manufacture . of plant .for such purposes lies behind the products of Francis Shaw and Co., Ltd., Corbett Street, Manchester, 11.

An important preliminary to retreading is a scrupulous examination of the cover to verify that all cords are intact. To facilitate this process a special examining machine is produced by this maker. Before the new camel-back is applied the surface must be properly prepared. For this purpose a patented buffing machine is made, which is designed to deal quickly with covers of varying sizes. outfits.

Other machines built by the Shaw Co. include a tread-applying stand and a pressure stitcher, which unites tread and carcase in such a manner that no air is trapped between. Vulcanizing moulds are made in ten sizes, covering tyres from 4-17 to 190-20, or altogether 58 different casing dimensions. The moulds are of welded construction and have large steam cavities to ensure a minimum vulcanizing period. Three standard tread designs are available, but special designs can be engraved to order at extra cost.

For bead-to-bead re-forming, there is a detreading machine and the moulding is carried through by means of the Shaw-Summit unit vulcanizer. The manufacturer's lists also give details of requisite steam boilers and cornpressor
