NOW that some 10 weekly parts of the publication, "Automobile Engineering" (Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons, Ltd. Parker Street, Kingsway, London, 17:7.0.2), have appeared, it is possible to estimate the value of this work, which will be completed in about 30 weekly parts at is, each.
"Automobile Engineering" is edited by Mr. EL Kerr Thomas, M.I.Mech.E., M.I.A.E., and the contributors include such men as Capt. Z. S. Irving, M.I.Mech.E.,M.I.A.E., Major A. Garrard, Wh. ix., and Mr. S. W. Nixon, M.Sc. The ground covered embraces practically every phase of the subject, including thermodynamics, petrol-engine theory and fuel technology, and covering frames, suspension systems, the design of rigid six-wheelers, brakes, some of the new transmission
systems and chassis layout generally. Whilst being readable and to the point, the sections are fully technical and include formulae and other data.
Another new Pitman publication is the "Law of Inland Transport," by Mr. W. U. Gunn, LL.B. (Load.), of the Middle Temple and South-eastern Circuit, barrister-at-law. Mr. Gunn is known to transport students as a lecturer on the rights and duties of transport undertakings at the North-western Polytechnic, London.
Part I deals with the carriage of goods generally, and Part III with the carriage of passengers, whilst Part II relates to railway goods carriage, and Part IV to air transport, canals and miscellaneous matters. Mr. Gunn expresses things briefly and covers a vast subject in a rational way.
