INSURANCE FIRM More -Than Business is urging van operators to check their vehicles more regularly, after it released figures showing that firms across the UK are losing £150m every year due to breakdowns.

More than 1.3 million vans and commercial vehicles per year require breakdown assistance, resulting in an average loss of earnings of £114 per hour.

More positively,the survey finds that the most common causes of commercial vehicle breakdown can easily be avoided. At the top of the breakdown list are battery problems, followed by punctured tyres and overheating engines. Mike Bowman, head of MoreThan Susi n ess, says:"A great deal of money could be saved by making simple, routine checks to the vehicle as well as ensuring that motorists are aware of basic vehicle maintenance such as how to change a wheel or check coolant levels.

The top 10 causes of breakdown also include driver errors that could easily be avoided, such as leaving the lights on and draining the battery as well as drivers locking themselves out of their vehicles.

Most alarmingly, vehicles being filled up with the wrong type of fuel was in sixth place.
