After two months, Stephen Bowles feels it is "not appropriate" to continue in his post. Andy Salter and Roanna Avison report

STEPHEN BOWLES, chairman of the Road Haulage Association (RHA), has resigned.

Bowles had sought to get the ban on his directorship of Roy BowlesTransport, which had been in place since 1999, lifted by the Western Traffic Area Office. But the Deputy Traffic Commissioner for the area has rejected the request, making his position at the RHA untenable. The RHA board accepted his resignation.

Bowles says he approached the Traffic Commissioners 12 months ago regarding a change of licence. "I have now had a reply from the Deputy TC who presided over the application and [...] this was not successful. "I feel it is not appropriate for me to continue as national chairman of the Road Haulage Association.

In response Jonathan Bulmer, RHA senior vice-chairman, says: "The board recognised Steve's particular circumstances dating from 10 years ago, but were confident that his dedication to the RHA and the interests of road haulage that he has championed so well made him a good candidate for chairman.

"However, while the Deputy Traffic Commissioner was more than satisfied on his conduct over the past 10 years.we do understand that Steve feels the action he has taken is the only appropriate one.

"It is our confident hope that he will continue to remain an active and prominent participant in the affairs of the RHA."

Bowles' predecessor as RHA chairman, Willie Oliver, will serve for the remaining 10 months until fresh elections are held with the formation of a new board of directors.
