Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Following publication of our walichart on Vehicle Excise Duty (CM 19-25 July) we have received a number of calls querying the ordinary 12-month rates for vehicles up to 30 November.

The rates shown in our chart are those contained in the Vehicles Excise and Registration Act 1994 (as amended by various Finance Acts). The rates of duty presently being charged by DVLA are less than these, but have no statutory basis. They result from a statement by the Chancellor in the November 2000 Budget that VED rates would be cut by 50%, but no legislation has been enacted by Parliament to provide for the transitional rates now being charged by the DVLA. Thus the figures in our chart, while technically correct in law, appear outdated.

To help clarify the matter and aid comparison between current rates and the new rates Corning into force in December, Commercial Motor is happy to publish below the transitional rates being applied by the DVLA to the most common goods vehicles up to 30 November.

For further information call the DVLA on 0870 240 0010 or see www.dvia.govuk/vehicles/hgv_ reduction.htm.
