THE omnipotent Jim fixed the launch of Townsend Thorsen's third new ferry ship, Pride of Free Enterprise (8200 tons), in Germany for a seven-year-old girl. When I was seven there
was no Jim and even Santa Claus had not been born, so I had to be satisfied with the launch of a celluloid duck in the bath.
When the three new vessels, each capable of carrying 60 12metre lorries, are in service, it will be possible for ferries to leave for Dover and Calais every 90 minutes, with up to 30 crossing every 24 hours.
