• The Dartford Bridge company is set to beat its target of closing the 65m-high crossing for only 15 hours a year due to bad weather. Since it opened almost six months ago the bridge has only been partly blocked off for around three and a half hours because of fog or high winds (CM 31 Oct-6 Nov 1991).
However, last winter was unusually mild. Over 28,000 trucks use the bridge every day; the toll will rise in September in line with inflation.
