Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

II I am in total agreement with Mick Chilton regarding vehicle excise duty (CM 13-19 Feb). I am an owner-driver and make regular trips to Italy. Five days out of six I drive on French and Italian motorways and have to pay their road tolls.

Last week these tolls totalled £318.81 per trip including the Mont Blanc tunnel — and I still have to tax my vehicle at £3,410 a year.

The Department of Transport should implement a day tax system for every vehicle (UK or foreign) that enters the UK, and give international UK hauliers a reduced rate.

This would give the department more money in its purse and also give UK Customs officers, some of whom are losing their jobs, something useful to do. DJ Brownsey Taunton, Somerset.
