• Somerset County Council has lost a vehicle worth £76,000 after cunning thieves destroyed every security device on the premises.

The Foden 4000 Series 8x4 rigid with its Multilift HL32/56 unit was taken on the night of March 25 from the council's Odcombe waste disposal site near Yeovil. The registration is J26 GTC, chassis number is 404850 and engine number 5KDO2508.

The vehicle had been parked in the fenced, locked compound when the thieves cut through the fence, cut the phone lines, broke into the office, smashed the alarm systems, broke the key box and started the vehicle. They had cut the bolt on the gate and kept the padlock intact se the gates could be tied with string and the padlock replaced to avoid early detection.

"We think it's in some container in a port. It's far too obvious a vehicle to drive around," says Somerset specification officer Dave Pengilly. "We've heard that there have been nine skip lorries stolen around the country in the past three months, two of them from Dorset County Council."

/ The spate of Volvo thefts in Norfolk continues (CM 26 Mar-1 Apr). Thieves took RBT Transport's FL10 tractive unit from Vinces Road Industrial Estate, Diss between 18:00hrs and 05:00hrs on 24-25 March. The company is offering a £1,000

reward for the £40,000 vehicle.

The 18-month-old 4x2 is registered H270 SAH with chassis number YV2F3ASA6LA350827 and engine 27906. It is white with a black chassis and has the blue and yellow RBT Nationwide Distribution livery on the doors and front. All tyres were new and the tanks were full.

RBT boss Mick Brown runs a fleet of eight and has to replace the tractive unit. "In cash it's cost me several thousand pounds, including lost earnings, hiring a vehicle until the insurance comes through and covering the difference between the book value and the cost of a new replacement vehicle."
