• The Department -of the Environment is examining the possibility of fares increases being linked more directly to wage rises in the psv operating industry. This news was given to Mr T. L. Beagley of the DoE last week, speaking at the joint conference organized by CM and the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association. (A report of the conference appears on pages 36

to 39 of this issue).

Mr Beagley was answering a question from a delegate, and his reply indicated that the Department was concerned at the possible effects on bus service viability of increases in labour costs, which sometimes take time to recoup through the machinery for fares increases.

He also spoke of a general Government intention to reduce red tape in general, with the transport industry being among the likely beneficiaries of such a move.
