Electric vehicles for city centre

NEWCASTLE IS planning to introduce a fleet of electric vehicles that will operate from an out-oftown distribution depot to deliver to shops within the city centre.

The council confirmed last week that it is negotiating with Clipper Logistics for the contract, which the council hopes will start operating next Easter.

Wendy Taylor, the city council's executive member for the environment, says the council is "very keen to go ahead" with a scheme that it hopes will cut congestion.

She adds the electric vehicles could also be used to take packaging away from the shops, as well as deliver goods to them.

The electric vehicle systemwill be underpinned by the introduction of a network of charging points across the city.

Taylor says the scheme would likely benefit smaller and medium-sized businesses, as well as "underline the position of the North-East as a centre or electric vehicles".

Clipper Logistics declined to comment.
