• Scottish hauliers may have to pay financially damaging road tolls on one of the country's busiest commercial vehicle routes from the start of the millennium.

Reports suggest that a year-long pilot scheme will be launched next spring on the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The Scottish office says charging road users is a possibility under a new Scottish Parliament, but this is not expected to sit before July next year. Peter Wright, director of Dalkeith Transport and Storage Company, a regular user of the M8, is horrified that charging is even being considered. "This is another tax on hauliers," he says. "This must not be allowed to happen."

Steven Norris, director general of the Road Haulage Association, says it is telling the Government that freight must be free from road charges. "We are essential rood users," he says.
