• A bid to site a key stagingpost for Channel Tunnel freight in Doncaster is going ahead this week, with local councillors urging transport minister Peter Bottomly to consider the town for the multi-million customs clearing depot and roadrail interchange that the Government wants in the North of England.
The councillors have shown the minister a study of their proposed site — one of about six promised by the Government for 1993, when the tunnel is due for completion. Freight from all over the North would be driven to Doncaster and loaded onto special crosschannel trains.
