Mr Pygall said that the transitionary period of slimming down the regional companies had gone well, were only 50 redundancies.

"In restructuring these companies, major consideration was given to our customers to avoid service disruptions, and at the same time to reflect, more accurately, the character of the different regions," Mr Pygall said.

Daily management of the re. gional companies is still with the regional head offices. In operation, overall direction is agreed between functional management at head office and the managing directors of the regions, Mr Pygall explained.

"Thereafter, the regional companies control all day to day activity, with assistance from the Group if required," he said.

Moving on to the individual regions, Ron Fortune, BRS Northern managing director, outlined his region's activities. Contract hire and distribution are the major services provided, although engineering and warehousing services are expanding sectors, he said.

BRS Northern has its headquarters at Harrogate and runs 37 branches. It has 2,400 staff and 1,850 vehicles and 1,000 trailers.

BRS Southern, run by John Farrant, is mainly involved in contract hire and distribution. Mr Farrant said that Clearfreight, its transport management and brokerage service, was becoming an increasingly important service.

The region covers 10 counties and has 29 branches. It has 1,572 staff and 1,569 vehicles.

BRS Western reports that general haulage is picking up in demand. Managing director Ron Irons said that his region employed 1,470 staff and operated over 2,000 vehicles and trailers.

The fourth region, BRS Midlands, covers nine counties and has 24 branches. Managing director Robbie Burns has split the region into two areas, each with a general manager.
