Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE TERRIER is available for the UK operator in both haulage and tipper form to cover gross vehicle weights ranging from 6.61 tonnes (6.5 tons) to 9.6 tonnes (9.5 tons). Although all the models share the same basic mechanical specification in standard trim, there are options available which should enable operators to select the machine most suitable to their needs.

A four-cylinder diesel engine of 3.77 litres (230cu in) capacity is standard equipment for the 6.6 and 7.5 tonnes (6.5 and 7.38 tons) models. This Bathgate produced unitdesignated the 4-98NV -develops 51 kW (69bhp) at 2,600 rpm net installed to BS AV 141a. The maximum torque of 230Nm (17011pft) is produced at 1,650rpm.

As an option on the smaller models and as standard equipment in the 8.64 and 9.66tonne (8.5 and 9.5-ton) machines, the six-cylinder 6-98 DV is specified. Sharing the same bore and stroke as the

four cylinder version98 x125rnm (3.858 x 4.921in) -this 5.66-litre (345cu in) unit produces 68kW (91bhp) to the same standard at the same engine speed. The maximum torque is increased to 312Nm (2301b ft) at 1,400 rpm.

For the top-weight Terrier model-the TR950-a further engine option is listed. This is a higher performance version of the 6-98, the NV, which gives 81kW net (109bhp) at 2,600rpm and is available only as a catalogued option on this model.

A single dry-plate clutch of 279mm (11in) in diameter transmits the power to a four speed all synchromesh gearbox with a direct drive top gear. The four-speed gearbox is standard equipment throughout the Terrier range with the exception of the 109bhp model which must use the five-speed unit which is available as an option for all the other models. The five-speed box has an overdrive top gear with a ratio of 0.85 to 1. For the 8.5 and 9.5 ton Terriers, the clutch diameter is increased to 305 mm (12in)-again a single dry-plate component with hydraulic actuation.

Whatever the model number, from TR650 to TR950, a choice of four wheelbases is available to meet an operator's needs. The shortest wheelbase of 2.87m (911 5in) is intended solely for the tipper men while the haulage machines are available in three longer wheelbases of 3.35, 3.85 and 4.35m (lift, 12ft Sin and 14ft 3in).

Taking the two extremes to illustrate the available body space, the swb tipper measures 3.76m (12ft 4in) from the end of the chassis to the back of the cab while the longest wheelbase option measures 6.05m (19ft 10in) under the same conditions.

With Terriers available as both tipper and haulage machines, a choice of axle ratio is obviously necessary and so the four-cylinder model can be supplied with a choice of three ratios. The two higher ratios (ie numerically lower) are also available for the sixcylinder models. The available ratios in total are 4.7, 5.125 and 5.86 to 1.

With the lowest axle rah( available, the four-cylinde tipper Terrier has a maximunr restart capability of 21.8 pe cent (1 in 4.6) and a maximurr rolling capability of 23.6 (1 ir 4.25). If the optional sixcylinder unit is requestec these figures are increased tc 27 per cent (1 in 3.7) and 27.E per cent (1 in 3.6) respectively In this sector of the market the chassis-cab weight is extremely important and in thi. respect the Terrier range shom up well. Taking the two extremes to illustrate the poini gives us the swb TR650 ant the lwb TR950. The forme has an approximate chassi: weight of 2.36 tonnes (2 font 61cwt) while the latter weigh; in at 3.02 tonnes (2 tom 19cwt).
