• Fares on the R8 service of Crosville Motor Services Ltd (Pwllheli-Nefyn–Ltangwnnadl) are to be reduced by 33.3 per cent during off-peak periods for a period of three months. The experiment, mounted in conjunction with Caernarvonshire county council, commences on Monday (November 1), and is restricted to single fares only.
Originally listed amongst the loss-making services, the R8 has been subsidized under Section 34 of the Transport Act since Mii.ch 13. The slashing reductions in fares are being offered to provide cheaper travel for the elderly during off-peaks, and to
ascertain whether or not reduced fares will encourage additional passenger traffic and increase the overall revenue on the service.
While no other reduced fares experiments are planned by the company at the moment, the results of the R8 fares cuts will be awaited with great interest by authorities and operators throughout the country, a spokesman for Crosville has claimed. Examples of the cuts are as follows (normal fares in parenthesis): PwItheli to Nefyn lip (16p); PwIlheli to Edern 13p (20p); and Pwllheli to Llangwnnadl 18p (27p).
