Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Gibb Grace Any type of servicing tool enabling an unskilled fitter to give a quick, accurate fault diagnosis must reduce vehicle down-time and, of course, the cost of expensive repairs resulting from defects not otherwise being discovered owing to lack of skilled labour.

Leslie Hartridge Ltd, a company within the Lucas Group, manufactures a wide range of engine fault-finding equipment for use by the unskilled fitter, including an analyser for use with petrolengines. This tool is designed to test the ignition, charging, starting and battery circuits, and also cylinder pressure balance. To aid simple operation it has no oscilloscope and all the measurements required are displayed on large, easilY read meters. The analyser is suitable for all four-, sixand eight-cylinder engines operating with 12V batteries and equipped with alternator or generator with ballasted or non-ballasted coil circuits and with positive or negative earths.

Sixteen engine functions are measured, four when the engine is stationary and 12 while the engine is running.

The console is designed in modular form so that additional test equipment — ie for brake testing, exhaust-gas analysing and manifold vacuum and steering geometry checks can be added as required.
