NATIONALIZED
AT September 30, the British Transport Commission had acquired more than 150 road haulage undertakings out of a total of some 3,000 which, according to Sir Cyril Hurcomb, the chairman, are liable to nationalization. Many of these companies belonged to large groups, so that negotiation was greatly simplified.
The exact number of vehicles involved is not known, but is substantial. Up to July last, some 4,000 vehicles and trailers had been taken over, after which the Holdsworth and Hanson group, comprising 23 companies owning about 800 vehicles, sold out to the Commission for a sum believed to be about £3,000,000. It is likely that the B.T.C. has already acquired more than 5,000 vehicles from long-distance hauliers.
The names and addresses of the concerns so far taken over are published in two booklets issued last week by the Road Transport Executive. One is a gazetteer, in which the concerns are listed geographically; the kind of business done and rciutes of regular trunk services are also indicated. The other is a " Monthly List of Acquired Undertakings."
Monthly Additions
• The foreword to the gazetteer says that " its imperfections are realized; it is but the first attempt in an effort to provide a monthly guide that will, it is hoped, be of assistance not only to those within the industry, but to road transport users generally. It will be added to month by month, each number being complete at the date of issue, until the last number constitutes a complete record relating to all freight undertakings controlled by the Road Transport Executive."
