URING the month of August last L.1 153 bus companies or proprietors were operating in and from the Irish Free State, their gross passenger receipts totalling 196,248. Of that sum 171,116 was taken by 20 companies, each of which earned in the month £1,000 or over, and £7,654 by 12 companies earning £500 or over.

In the first eight months of the present year over 31,000,000 passengers were carried in the Irish Free State by road-motor services. In that period 15,246,000 vehicle-miles were run and D52 gross passenger receipts were £543,317.

During August 1,972,000 vehicle-miles were covered, 4,511,000 passengers were carried and gross passenger receipts totalled 189,894—an average of 10.94th per vehicle-mile. Almost a quarter of the passengers carried during August3,110,000—were conveyed on buses on Dublin city services, 328,000 on services between Dublin and other points, and 523,000 on Cork services.

On Dublin city services 764,000 vehicle-miles were covered and passenger receipts amounted to £31,644. In every

case an increase was shown over the figures for the corresponding period of

3928. Vehicles on services crossing the border of Northern Ireland covered in the month 137,000 vehicle-miles, the vehicles carried 85,000 passengers and receipts amounted to 16,354.

The statistics reveal the fact that, whilst vehicles on the Dublin city services carried 4.07 passengers per vehicle-mile, their average passenger receipts were 9.95d., as compared with 11.10th produced on the cross-border services with .62 persons per bus-mile.
