Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I passed my C+E in the summer and am concerned about driving my truck in the snow and ice for the first time this winter. What advice can you give me about winter driving?

As with smaller vehicles, the key to driving in slippery conditions is to drive smoothly at an appropriate speed for the conditions. If it could be icy drive slowly and increase your braking distance. Don't stamp on the brakes, instead ease off the accelerator and depress the pedal gently.

Carry a shovel in the cab in case your truck gets stuck in snow. Sacking can also be put under the wheels to give them something to grip on as the vehicle pulls away.

Another thing to look out for in cold weather is the fact that moisture can freeze in the air tanks, which will prevent the pressure building up properly in the cold weather. It might make sense to drain the air tanks every day to prevent the moisture freezing.

Wind and heavy rain can also cause problems in the winter. High-sided vehicles can be particularly vulnerable in exposed places in high winds. Heavy rain can not only affect visibility but also braking distances and grip.

• See CM 1 November for 'Cold Comfort', a special feature on winter precautions.
