THE BENEFITS of the proposed rush-hour lorry ban through King's Lynn town centre will be marginal while the additional costs for local trade and industry will be substantial, according to the Freight Transport Association.
ETA says that Norfolk County Council should assess the benefits in the context of existing levels of noise, vibration and exhaust pollution and should consider objectively the degree of improvement which a ban would achieve. The benefits would then have to be balanced against the increased costs to consumers.
A similar ban was considered by the Council in 1977 but the inspector decided that the cost of closing the town centre route would be too high. ETA has now asked the Council to provide evidence that the situation has sufficiently changed since 1977 to justify a ban in 1980.
