A case in which it was clearly shown that road transport was the best means for transport came before the 'Yorkshire Licensing Authority, at Leeds. When Smith and Robinson (Leeds), Ltd., Kimberley Road, Leeds, applied for permission to acquire two sixwheeled tankers, each with an unladen weight of 9-I tons, it was stated that they were required for the carriage of oil, which had to be heated to prevent it from solidifying during transit If the oil were sent by rail, it would have to be transported in solid form and then melted down again, involving considerable extra cost.

Bottles of oil in liquid and solid form were exhibited to the Licensing Authority, to illustrate the company's case. The application was granted.

Opposing Increased Import Duty on Track-laying Tractors.

The Council of the National Farmers Union has endorsed the report of its commercial committee for opposing the application, before the Import Duties Advisory Committee, for increases in the import duties on track-laying agricultural tractors. We intimated that the duties were likely to be increased in our issue -dated October 25.

The opposition of the N.F.U. is based on the fact that, although farmers arc anxious to use British equipment, any restriction on imported machines should be opposed until British manufacturers, protected by a reasonable duty, are capable of producing machines of proved reliability at a capital outlay within the farmer's reach.
