GOVERNMENT HOPE TO IMPROVE LONDON ROADS WHEN London's traffic congestion VY problem was discussed in the House of Commons, last week, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, Mr. J. Gurney Braithwaite, said that it was the Government's hope that the economic situation would allow important road improvements to be carried out in the not too distant future.

He mentioned improvements that had been effected—no-waiting restrictions, unilateral parking, greater use of traffic signals, and the building of roundabouts at Waterloo Bridge and Westminster Bridge--and said that although traffic in 1952 was 15.6 per cent, greater in volume than in 1949, its speed had not declined.

Mr. Eric Fletcher stated that there had been no major road improvements in inner London since 1905, and that the cost of delays was impossible to calculate.
