Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The fuel penalty paid by hauliers who switch from 41 toms to 114 tonnes might not bees big as they expect, according to Wincantan engineering director Jim Taylor. "You might be looking at no more than 2-5%," he says.

There are several reasons for this, he suggests. The vehicles will almost certainly be fairly new, and thus mere frugal with fuel than elder truck and net all tips will be made at the maximum weight.

Jim Weir, managing director of S Jones Transport, agrees that there is a slight increase In consumption, probably of less than 0.5mpg.

Wanng, of BM Watling & Sons, adds: "We're running 420hp and 4130hp tractive units, and an extra three tonnes of payload is norther here nor there so far as they are concerned when It comes to diesel usage and performance."

Jim Taylor expects any increase in maintenance casts and reduction in tyre mileage to be minimal when compared with a 41-tanner.
