THE FREIGHT Transport Association has urged operators and drivers of lorries to take greater responsibility as leaders in the campaign for better road safety.
FTA director-general Garry Turvey told Greater Manchester members that the police should support this initiative with greater levels of enforcement in order to make British roads safer.
He said that although lorries are involved in fewer accidents than any other category of vehicle, there is no case for complacency in haulage.
Growth in motorway traffic will not be matched by motorway construction. All road users must learn to use them properly, he declared.
It is not necessary for lorries to break speed limits, he said. Speeding wastes fuel, increases wear, is unsafe and unproductive. He urged transport managers to perform more stringent tachograph checks and to discipline drivers who regularly transgress the drivers' hours regulations.
