NATIONAL Bus Company has again made some changes at senior level, resulting in James Weeks being promoted to chief engineer of Cumberland Motor Services. Mr Weeks was assistant chief engineer with United Counties from 1978. John Phillips has been named company secretary at Lincolnshire Road Car Company in succession to Ernest Ward who has retired. Mr Phillips was previously assistant secretary / accountant at London Country Bus Services based at Reigate. Finally, Philip Thomas has become company secretary (designate) at National Welsh and will actually take up his post from June 1. He has been company secretary of the Galliford Civil Engineering Group since 1977, and in his new position he succeeds Charles Merlin Williams who is retiring as company secretary after 28 years service with National Welsh, its predecessors Western Welsh and Rhondda Transport, and Devon General.

At Wilkinson Transport in Leeds, Chris Holmes becomes special accounts manager responsible for the northern region. Mr Holmes was previously with another Lex Service Group Company, Bees Transport Ltd, as Leeds depot manager.

Don Feaver has been appointed deputy director of Gilbey Vintners, controlling the distribution through Gilbey Vintners nationwide network of depots. Mr Feaver joined the r;ompany as regional controller in 1970 and later moved on to become sales director.

The Road Haulage AssociItion's Scottish area has named David Haig of David Haig (Belshill) Ltd, as chairman for the next two years_ Andrew Farmer (John Russell and Sons) and Bill Robertson (Avonmill Transport) take over as vice-chairman, while John Hunt steps down as chairman. The Freight Transport Association has announced some of its election results for 1980/81 with W. Robb of VVm W. Stevenson Ltd being named as chairman for the West Scotland division. Vice-chairmen are L. V. Jelley (M. Muir Plant and Haulage Ltd); G. E. Brockman (Scottish Milk Marketing Board); and J. S. Crone (DRG Lairds Packaging). New chairman for Devon and Cornwall is B. Ashwell (BOC Ltd), with vice-chairmen R. 0. Sanderson (West Fuel Company) and I. W. S. Sherriff (Amey Roadstone Corporation Ltd). B. E. Mellor of George Wedel and Son Ltd has been elected chairman for Avon and Wessex, while L. Richardson (Bradford Group of Companies), P. Hol ler (United Agricultural Merchants Ltd) and B. Dando (Booker Belmont Ltd) are named as vice-chairmen.

British Car Auctions has named Brian Strudwick as commercial vehicle sales executive, responsible for commercial vehicle and plant sales in all 13 BCA branches. Previously with the fleet department of BCA, Mr Strudwick has been with the company for ten years.

New area sales manager for VVadham Stringer Vehicle Contracts Ltd of Wateriooville is Derek Cross, who was formerly fleet sales and leasing executive with Wadham Stringer (Melksham) Ltd.

Bob Griffiths has been elected chairman of the Fellowship of the Motor Industry, and Jim Tryon has become vice chairman.

Obituary

We record with regret the death of Frank Waterhouse at the age of 60. From his garage at Binley, Mr Waterhouse built up a fleet of 16 tipper lorries and later moved his operation to Ryton Mill, Ryton. For ten years he was chairman of the tipper section of the Coventry, North Warwickshire and Rugby subarea of the Road Haulage Association and for six years was chairman of the sub-area.
