IN YOUR EDITION for week ending February 2 (p34) you carried an article by Brian Chalmers-Hunt which covered aspects of pumping and metering of petroleum-based liquids on road tankers.

While generally of value and containing a number of points of interest to those relatively new to the industry, the article did, however, fall down on its reference to suppliers.

Surely an article of this nature must be one of two things: either it must set out to be purely technical, in which case there is no need to mention specific suppliers of equipment; or it must be of use as a guide to alternative suppliers showing the relative merits and capabilities of their products.

Your article has fallen between these two stools. It has only touched on the technical aspects of pumping and metering, while on the question of suppliers it has mentioned only one supplier of meters, albeit the largest at present, and only two suppliers of pumps, omitting to mention my company, George Meller, which is the second largest supplier of truck pumps in the United Kingdom, with the Blackmer range.

Like the companies mentioned we also have a full range of pumps, not only suitable for, but very extensively used with, fuels from kerosene to black oil and also including solvents, bitumens and so on. We also have stainless-steel pumps, usually available exstock from our Ealing works, which are widely used for handling food products such as sugar, glucose, and caramel. We are also the largest United Kingdom supplier of lpg pumps to the road tanker and bottle filling market.

We even have pumps fitted to road tankers for pumping ink.

We have a wider range of pump sizes than most, ranging from lin to Sin and also provide a comprehensive engineering back-up service.

B. W. GRATTON Product Manager Blackmer Pumps George Mailer Ltd London W13 The article to which Mr Gratton refers did exactly what it set out to do. It did not pretend to be a guide to pump manufacturers. No doubt Mr Gratton's director will be pleased that the company has received a gratuitous mention in our columns — Editor.
