Russell chairman of British Road Services. The appointment of SIR REGINALD WILSON as president-elect was reported last week.

MR. J. S. GAVIN is to be chairman of Cumberland Motor Services,. Ltd.. in succession to MR. F. P. ARNOLD. MR. C. H. S. PICKETT is to become Chairman of the Southern National and the Western National Omnibus Companies, Ltd., in succession to MR. S. KENNEDY. MR M. HOLMESwill be chairman of Red and White Services, Ltd., United Welsh Services, Ltd., and the Thames Valley Traction Co. Ltd., in succession to Mr. Kennedy. Mr. Holmes has been appointed to fill the vacancies created by these changes on the boards of Cumberland Motor Services and of the Southern and Western National companies. The positions of Mr. Kennedy as chairman, and of Mr. Arnold as a member of the Tilling Group management board, also their appointments to the boards of other companies within the Tilling Group, are not affected by these changes. MR. R. I RIDGE, publicity manager of Guy Motors, Ltd., has resigned to take up a similar position with the Coseley Engineering Co., Ltd. He is succeeded by MR. P. HowDLE, formerly publicity manager of the James Cycle Co., Ltd.

MR. C. N. GRADDON has been elected chairman of the Industrial Transport Association. The vice-chairmen are MR, R. H. K/TSON and MR. R. J. HOLCOMBE. MR. P. THORP is honorary secretary and MR. E. YOUNG honorary publicity officer, MR. G. L. SMITH has been appointed general manager of Leigh Transport Department in Succession to the late MR. H. Lowr.. Mr. Smith had been traffic superintendent at Leigh since 1954, and deputy manager since 1955. From 1946 until 1954 he was traffic superintendent of Rawteristall Transport Department.

FORD SALES DROP 81%

AA TOTAL of 320,742 vehicles was sold by the Ford Motor Co.. Ltd., in '1956. a drop of 81 per cent. from the 1955 figure. compared with an average of 18 per cent, for the rest of the motor industry, states Sir Patrick Hennessy, chairman. in his annual report.

Strenuous export effort last year, during which representatives covered over 500,000 miles abroad, produced sales of 153,939 units valued at over £68m. Sales to the dollar area rose from S19i-m. in 1955 to 5291m. in 1956.

Sir Patrick refers to the penal rate of taxation and inadequacy of roads in Britain as handicapping the motor industry in competition with Continental manufacturers.
