niSCUSSION took place at the meet ing of the Manchester and Liverpool Section of the Institute of Transport, at Liverpool, last Friday, on the most desirable size for an amalgamation of local passenger-transport authorities. The questions were stimulated by an address given by Mr. Charles IL Stafford, general manager of the Burnley, Colne and Nelson Joint Transport Committee, on "Some Aspects of Municipal Transport Amalgamation."

Mr, D. Halliwell, M.B.E., hon. secretary, asked the lecturer what he• considered to be the ideal size for an amalgamated organization. Mr. Stafford pointed out that there was a limit imposed by the amount of finance that could be handled and by the number of men that had to be controlled.

Mr. Beckett said -there was really no answer to such a question. Geographical boundaries restricting the operation of road transport were being broken down.

LORRIES REPLACE BUSES IN DUBLIN STRIKE.

FOLLOWING repeated unsuccessful attempts to bring together the parties in the Dublin bus dispute, Mr. Scan Lemass, Irish Free State Minister for Industry and Commerce, introduced temporary serviceS operated by light Army lorries. The vehicles run between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. About 40 lorries, each capable of carrying 20 passengers, operate a 15-minute service over 21 routes.

The Minister has ordered that ,a Court of Inquiry under the Industry Courts Act, 1919, be set up to report to the Government on the men's claims in respect of wages and conditions.
