• Government confirmation that it will only allow uniformed police to stop trucks has been welcomed by the Freight Transport Association.

The amendment to the Environment Bill rules out authorising Vehicle Inspectorate staff and others to stop vehicles. The decision follows warnings about driver security if more agencies were given this right.

But there are still concerns over police availability for multi-agency vehicle checks. The VI has become increasingly worried over the number of checks it has been forced to cancel because police do not have enough officers.

Westminster council, which has been pushing for traffic wardens to be given the power to stop trucks and cars in the street for emissions tests, says it will "continue to press for new resources to improve police support" on traffic stops in London.
