IN Selective cuts in police work to allow officers to concentrate on catching criminals are the main proposals in the longawaited Home Office report on police core activities.
The review, launched 16 months ago, contained few surprises following a series of leaks. The main proposals affecting hauliers are: • Private escorts to be introduced for abnormal loads.
• Simplification of the rules governing broken down and abandoned vehicles;
• Reduction in the police involvement in roadworks and obstructions; • Various cuts in traffic-related paperwork; • A review of traffic patrol activity; • A possible increased role for traffic wardens.
The Freight Transport Association has asked the Home Office for assurance that its views will be taken into account when the recommendations on traffic policing are given further consideration.
