The Transport and General Workers' Union is joining forces with brewers' representatives to call for a 50% cut in the tax on beer. It has 38,000 members in the brewing industry and worries that, despite British beer being the cheapest in Europe to produce, jobs are threatened by high duty levels. Daytrippers bringing back van loads of cheap booze from the Continent have further hit the British licensed trade. Could it be that, with the current electoral uncertainty, the union senses a return to the days when it was a frequent visitor to Number 10? It would be a shame if there was not plenty of beer to accompany the
sandwiches.
Mith the German leg of the 1995 HA European Truck Racing Cup approaching next month, the Hawk learns that fiery Finn Minim Kuoppala is doing well in her third year in the tournament. Last year she finished a disappointing eighth in the Supertruck category but with a revamped Sisu Kuoppala is hoping for better things this year. A setback came earlier this month when she was shunted off the track in France but she is confident of lasting the distance after Germany with legs to come in Czechoslovakia, Belgium and Spain. Said to be a determined opponent, this Finn is far from finished.
