Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Steyr

Although still a relative newcomer to the UK market — its registrations do not yet appear in the monthly Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders lists — Steyr is trying hard to succeed in Britain — more than 70 have so far been registered over here.

Over two days of testing we found the 13S18 a very easy and undemanding vehicle to drive.

High power-to-weight, and a wide rev range with torque low down is a recipe for good fuel consumption — so long as its power is used conservatively.

While respectable, its average fuel returns did not quite match our expectations. Use of the top (overdriven) gear for a great deal of the time makes for relaxed driving but it contributed to a slightly slower journey time. Despite this, it should be said that on the road it was not noticeably slower than other traffic and if driven hard, as on the timed hill climbs, it is certainly quick.

The less-than-full-width cab gives an air of roominess: it is also very well appointed with a good standard of finish. Few of its competitors offer an adjustable steering wheel, exhaust brake and electrical adjustment to heated rear view mirrors as standard on a 13-tonner. All that is omitted is a suspension seat — but it can be specified as an option, along with electric windows, quarter lights, an underbumper air dam and vertical exhaust.

Steyr's reputation for engineering excellence has proceeded its arrival in Britain. The 13518 is a quality vehicle tailored to British taste with the inclusion of an Eaton gearbox.

Despite the effort of the Eurocrats the 13-tonne sector is still relatively untapped in the UK truck market, aside from the distribution companies. But if legislation changes were to come into effect, it could become far more important, with a resultant boost in sales. If this happens, Steyr should have little trouble in satisfying the demand for a "premium" 13-tonner with its 13518.
