Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• An Australian-made tri-axle low-loader trailer with hydraulically widening track, decks and ramps is being evaluated by Yorkshire heavy haulage operator AP Hollingworth.

With Type Approval imminent, the Cumberworth-based haulier aims to market threeand four-axled versions in Britain under an agreement with the builders, Drake Trailers of Rocklea, Queensland.

Known as the Tyresaver, the trailer can operate to C&U regulations in its 'closed' 2.5mwide position, but where heavier, abnormally-wide loads have to be moved under Special Types rules, the entire side deckings and wheel stations move outward from the centre spine in several widths up to 3.35m.

Power for the low-pressure system is supplied by a petrol engine or electric motor and widening controls are mounted at the rear end.

Double-hung hydraulic ramps extend to give a loading angle of 12° to the 965mm high load bed. The decks can be opened within a few minutes to their desired widths (2.74, 3.05 or 3.35m). And pneumatic lockpins and pants hold them firmly in position.

Drake's trailing arm suspension with its 114imn diameter rams, is a dampened, loadsharing system developed over 22 years, that can be raised or lowered by 100nun.

For the Australian and New Zealand markets, Drake uses its own stub axles and hubs, but for the UK, York TEC components will be supplied, together with 8.25x15 Toyo M90 radial tyres.

Hollingworth's 13.1m lowloader, with its 9.14m load bed, can carry payloads up to 40 tonnes and has an 18-tonne rated oscillating king pin for Special Types Category 1 and 2 work. It tares out at 10tonnes (this can be reduced by 500kg if required) and has axle ratings of 7.5 tonnes.

Retail prices have not yet been agreed, but deliveries are expected to take around 12 weeks, including the four weeks' shipping time.
