• Adams Foods, the UK marketing arm of the Irish Dairy Board, is shutting down its in-house national distribution operation.

Hillsdown Distribution has won the £1.25 million contract to handle the transport of Kerrygokl dairy products from September.

Adams managing director Dan–Buckley says: "Our decision to appoint a distribution company was taken in order to streamline deliveries and make the operation more costeffective."

Adams decided to run down its transport side after Tesco changed its distribution opertion. Adams previously transported goods for other suppliers as well as its own goods to Tesco. But changes in the operation meant Adams could no longer deliver goods for other suppliers, which made its transport operation "uneconomical".

Adams' transport interest employed 270 staff. Around 20 will be kept on and Adams hopes other workers will be employed in the Hillsdown operation. Hillsdown will handle distribution from Adams' Leek and Cuffley factories and a new traffic office will be sited at Barnfield.

About 10 articulated reefers will be based at the Leek site.
