Accent on Earning Power

In the purchase of a truck the main consideration isn't. initial cost, The first essential is earning ability, and earning ability on hard trucking work demands power, economy and durability.

In the Kew-built Dodge, per formance with economy is assured by an engine which provides maximum power at practical operating speeds. Among other things, durability is emphasised by the deep section frame with the Dodge triangulated cross bracing, and the rectangular section one-piece pressed steel casing of the hypoid rear axle. These features have given the Dodge its ability to provide profitable trucking operations on any haulage task.

The adaptable Fordson Major tractor will be displayed in various forms, including a rowcrop model and the standard agricultural machine. Farmers interested in types for use under difficult conditions will have an opportunity of inspecting a Fordson Major with County full-tracks and a Fordson Major with Roadless halftracks. The County model will be shown powered by a Perkins P6 oil engine. The Ford Motor Co., Ltd., Dagenham, Stand 564 C, will also have a full range of implements on view.

John Fowler and Co. (Leeds), Ltd., Hunslet, Leeds, on Stand 339 B, will display examples of the Fowler Mark VF crawler tractor, and the Fowler Challenger Mark III crawler tractor. The Mark VF model is powered by a Marshall single-cylindered two-stroke oil engine which develops 40 h.p. at the belt. The Challenger has a Meadows six-cylindered four-stroke oil engine which produces a maximum of .95 b.h.p, at 1,550 r.p.m. Drawbar h.p. is 82.4.

Gates and Hardy, Ltd., 66, Victoria Street, London, S.W.1, on Stand 646 C, will again be showing the prototype of a four-wheeled tractor employing the Gates L.G.1 system of transmission.

Thomas Green and Son, Ltd., Leeds, 2, will be showing on machinery and petrol and oil engines, a Lister 1-ton end-tipping truck will be shown by R. A. Lister and Co., Ltd., Dursley, Gloucester, on Stand 336 C.

Marshall, Sons and Co., Ltd., Gainsborough, Lines, plans to show the Series 3 oil-engined tractor and tandem oil-engined roller in addition to a combine harvester and thresher, on Stand 339 B. The 1950 Series 3 model tractor employs a single-cylindered twostroke oil engine which has a maximum governed speed, under load, of 750 r.p.m.

Although the Nuffield Universal tractor has been on the market for only 21 years, there are now 6,000 in use in Britain and a further 3,500 have been shipped abroad. A representative selection of all models for operation on vaporizing oil, oil fuel or petrol, will be shown on Stand 563 D, where altogether there will be nine tractors made by the Nuffield Organization, Cowley, Oxford. The hydraulic-lift unit, incorporating two-lever control fitted to the tractor, makes provision for independent operation of two hydraulically operated implements. Features of the Nuffield arrangement are valves for controlling the rate of lowering and for the anti-crash purposes which prevent damage to the implement under hard conditions.

The Vickers tractor, powered by the Rolls-Royce six-cylindered oil engine, will be shown by Jack Olding and Co., Ltd., Hatfield, Herts, on Stand 285 D. Other exhibits on this stand will include a Barber-Greene Olding bucket loader which is a self-propelled unit mounted on large-diameter pneumatic-tyred wheels. It is capable of handling 60-90 cubic yds. per hour of any freeflowing materials, including fertilizers, sand and gravel.

A gas-proof tractor cab, designed to give complete protection to the driver when spraying insecticides, will be . shown by Pest Control, Ltd., Harston, Cambridge, on Stand 77 D.

A complete range of motor mowers, including' a new 17-in, light-alloy machine, is to be shown by Charles H. Pugh, Ltd., Whitworth Works, Birmingham, 9, on Stand 55F, As in previous years, Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies, Ltd., Orwell. Works, Ipswich, Suffolk, will be showing a wide range of exhibits and will occupy two stands. The models on Stand 386 G will comprise lawn mowers powered by air-, and watercooled petrol engines, and a gang mower.

Roadless Traction, Ltd., Hounslow, Middlesex (Stand 356 C), will be exhibiting half-track equipment for the Fordson Major, Massey-Harris and Allis-Chalmers tractors. Also to be shown on this stand will be the Roadless Model E full-track tractor.

Light-alloy cabs for practically every make of tractor are a speciality of Scottish Aviation, Ltd., Prestwick Air

port, Ayrshire. This concern will be demonstrating all-weather protection for drivers on Stand 308 D.

Skyhi, Ltd., Worton Road, Isleworth, Middlesex, plans to demonstrate

hydraulic loaders fitted to Eordson, Ferguson, Nuffield and Farmall tractors. In addition, the new Skyhi heavyduty loader, which has a 1-cubic-yd.capacity shovel, will be shown on Stand 81 C.

Several types of pedestrian-controlled Trusty tractors will be shown by Tractors (London), Ltd., Barnet, Hens, on Stand 178 B.

The latest Umpower light four-wheeldrive model, termed the Junior, will be

demonstrated by Universal Power Drives, Ltd., Aintree Road, Perivale, Middlesex, on Stand 416 B. This model, of 2-3 tons capacity, is a development of the Unipower tractor and employs the Perkins P6 oil engine. The Forester, equipped with Gardner 41W oil engine, and Hannibal, with 5LW engine, will also be on view. The Forester, with a Taskers 15-ton pole trailer, is described in the road test on pages 614-617 of this issue.
