• Livestock haulier Gordon Gilder, who has suffered repeated attacks by animal rights activists, has failed in a bid to expand his headquarters. Gilder wanted to develop a paddock at Gretton Fields, near Winchcombe, Glos, into a parking compound for 10 HGVs.

Tewkesbury Borough Council rejected the plan and he appealed to a planning inquiry which was held last month.

But the inquiry inspector, Robert Yuille, has dismissed his appeal, and has also rejected an alternative proposal to remove a restriction which stops Gilder parking his trucks within 4.4 metres of the road.

Yuille upheld the ruling of the local council that any changes would cause noise and disturbance to Marlborough Cottages, "an attractive rural area".

Yuille said: "I conclude that the expansion in the site area of this existing business, as proposed in either of the appeal schemes, would have a significantly harmful effect on the generally rural character of the area and would run counter to the aims of the relevant policies in the existing and emerging development plan."

Gilder employs 35 people and has space for 33 tractors and 30 semis in the yard. He says: "I find it quite alarming that a golden opportunity to improve the environment of this area and reduce the movement of vehicles has been lost."
