An innovative trailer loading crane could soon be on the UK market flits US manufacturer finds a European distributor.

The CargoMaster system, designed and built by Wayne Engineering of Cedar Falls, Iowa, is able to carry loads of around 3,600kg. With runners extending the length of the trailer the versatile crane is able to reach any part of the bay with its load.

Constructed mainly from steel C-sections, the CargoMaster range starts with the 500 Series with a maximum load of 226kg up to the 8000 rated at 3,628kg. This version weighs around 1.2 tonnes. Load travel beyond the trailer body varies from 1.2m for the heavy-duty version up to 2.5m for lighter units fitted with double-folding rails. The arms can be stored along the length of the trailer or across the back when not in use.

Wayne says it looks for sturdy steel posts in trailers to support the crane and its load, but also markets kits to reinforce units in preparation for the system.

One-man operation is by wanderlead with winch power coming off the truck battery.

Accessories include selflevelling forks for pallets and spreader bars with slings to take bundles or bulky loads.

Wayne Engineering says the system, which costs around $17,500 in the US (£11.000) for the 8000, is more reliable. will outlast tail-lifts and many units are still in daily use after 20 years.
