IN Truck drivers are being urged to play their part in the fight against drug, tobacco and alcohol smuggling by reporting any suspicious behaviour on a new confidential hotline.
The freephone number, 0800 59 5000, was launched last week by Paymaster General Dawn Prirnarolo who said tobacco smugg1ng cost the
Treasury £1,7bn last year. "The
new hotline is a great opportunity for people to make a difference," she added. Customs and Excise says intelligence from the public is vital to detect and prosecute smugOrs and bootleggers.
