• Fire appliance manufacturer Carmichael International has launched an 8x8 Airport Crash Tender. The "Cougar" is based upon an Irish-built Timoney chassis and will carry 13,000 litres of liquid. Power comes from a 615kW (825hp) Detroit Diesel engine driving through a fully automatic gearbox and power divider.

Fire-fighting equipment includes a Carmichael power-assisted roof-mounted monitor, capable of delivering 4,500 litres per minute. Using new materials and construction techniques has helped to reduce monitor build times significantly. Optional equipment includes a smaller bumper-mounted monitor.

Chassis details include fully independent suspension by double wishbones and telescopic shock absorbers. Conventional steel suspension is also available.

The first Cougar will go into service at Stansted Airport in Essex, with the British Airports Authority. Other new vehicles in the Carmichael fire-fighting range include the 4,500-litre 4x4 "Condor" light foam tender and "Cobra" 6x6. The BAA is evaluating two Cobras for other UK airports.
