MANY hauliers in the Eastern Borders area are "on the breadline".
That is the message of a campaign launched by the Eastern Borders Hauliers' Association, centred at Berwick-on-Tweed.
The association aims to show its members' customers and the public that, while hauliers in the area are anxious not to increase prices, they cannot work for nothing or at a loss.
One example shows that a suitable vehicle, which cost £8,000 in 1973, is now £16,100.
Other examples of soaring costs include problems arising from government and other external influences which hit the trade "without warning."
The hauliers' campaign first of its type in the Scottish trade is designed to demonstrate "where the blame lies for any future increase in rates."
