R.T.C. RESEARCH COUNCIL HOLDS FIRST MEETING

THE first meeting of the Research Advisory Council of the British Transport Commission was held in London last week. In addition to the chairman.Sir Cyril Hurcornb, and the chairmen or representatives of the Executives, the .council consists of Sir Charles F. Goodeve, O.B.E., D.Sc., F.R.S., Professor R. V. Jones, C.B., C.B.E., Sir Thomas R. Merton, F.R.S., Professor D. M. Newitt, M.C., D.Sc., F.R.S., Sir William Slimier, F.R.S., and Dr. H. E. Merritt, chief research officer to the B.T.C.

• It Was set up as a result of the report of a cOmmittee, over which Sir William Startler presided, upon the steps required to promote the fullest-application of research to the problems of the Commission and its Executives. This report, having . been ,accepted by the Minister of Transport, is now being carried into effect.

. RELIEF FROM TAX FOR • HARVEST WORK

*THE usual concession, during the

grain harvest, to operators of vehicles taxed for agricultural purposes is being made this year. Such vehicles can, from July 11 until November 30, carry-in, in the "course of grain harvesting, or incidental operations, the grain harvested, straw or other matter resulting from the harvesting, workers engaged on the job, and articles required in connection with the harvesting.

Use in this way does not make the sehicle liable to a higher rate of duty. The dispensation is grantedunder the Agricultural Goods Vehicles (Temporary Relief from Duty) Order, 1949.

VEHICLE EXPORTS DROP

ACCORDING to Board of Trade P1figures for June, exports of complete commercial vehicles and chassis for that month amounted to 6,333, or 2.280 fewer than in May, and the lowest since August, 1948.

Sixty-eight agricultural tractors were exported to the United States during June, a figure which compares with 72 as the monthly average for the second quarter of this year, and 417 as the average for the first' quarter.
