Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TESTER'S CHOICE: RENAULT MIDLUM Highly Commended: Scania R114 380 4x2 Shortlisted: Oaf LF 45, Foden Alpha 8x4 tipper

fly manufact urer which produces 7.5-tonne trucks knows they are the backbone of its sales operation, and crucial to its overall success. It is the most competitive sector because of its potential volume and the varied work these vehicles are expected to do.

Since the Renault Midlum's launch in 2000, effectively starting Renault from scratch in the UK 7.5-tonne market, it has become a firm favourite with operators. Its emergence into the used market place has simply underlined this popularity giving Renault Trucks a vital ally to the Premium.

Our test example, a day-cab dropside straight out of a rental company, provided proof that it does more than just survive in the second-hand marketplace, thanks to a sound driveline combined with functionality and impressive drivability.

It produced a very competitive fuel figure nd we were impressed by how well its interior tad aged.We were even more impressed hat Renault had gone to the trouble to put ogei her a purpose-built sheet to cover the Dadspace. Only a real gem could edge Scania n to second place, and the Midlum was just hat. Scania's R114 4x2 380 tractor with a tandard sleeper cab was in excellent condi Lion, and with the 4x2 tractor market enjoying a resurgence this was the ideal vehicle to put forward for test.

The entire range of Scania trucks, from fleet up to lbpline, enjoys a rare level of desirability. They command impressive residuals. making them firm favourites with hauliers, ownerdrivers and own-account operators alike. Our vehicle produced a top fuel figure. its overall condition was exemplary, and it was a pleasure to drive.

Also shortlisted was the Foden Alpha 8x4 Upper tested in June. It helped us understand that not all operators have the same priorities. The powerful Caterpillar engine provided its previous owner with the reliability it needed for off-road work as well as moving 32 tonnes on road from quarry to merchant's yard with minimum fuss.

Our final finalist, the 1999-registered Daf 45 with a box body. was a worthy contender. Underlining the competitiveness of the 7.5tonne market place it provided functionality, a flexible engine and sound drivability. •
