Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TESTER'S CHOICE:TOYOTA HILUXVX 270 Highly Commended: Ford Ranger SuperCab Shortlisted: Mitsubishi L200. NissanTerrarto 3.0

First to be voted off the show, the Proton Jumbuck, claimed chassis engineering by Lotus. We're unsure if the fact that otus doesn't compete in Fl racing any more . relevant. Next to go was the IsuzuTrooper, 'Inch combined the appeal of a highly torquey free-litre engine with downright dowdy :yling, inside and out.

But we were impressed by one 4x4 van: the issanTerrano. The revised interior is stylish rid practical, while its chunky exterior looks ren't over-the-top. Its three-litre engine tanages to combine strong performance with rnarkable economy for its type, earning it a lace in the finals.

That leaves us with four 4x4 pickups playing iusical chairs over three spots in the shortlist. The legacy of some out-dated import tariff ales which created almost identical specs for apanese or Japanese-influenced pickups is :tat most of the current crop still have 2.5-litre ngines. They also share torsion-bar front and leaf-spring rear suspension. These fundamental similarities only serve to exaggerate the areas where they do differ.

The unlucky contender comes from Nissan. The Navara is a good pickup by any standards, but the Outlaw spec of our test vehicle, with I31hp and a vast inventory of "lifestyle" options, left us unsure of how it would handle life as a working vehicle.

Mitsubishi's offering is the best seller in the sector, but we still can't work out why. Although competent enough. it has distinctly unimpressive running costs thanks to relatively poor economy and a heavy appetite for routine servicing.

The Ford Ranger with its ingenious pillarless rear-hinged door arrangement is Highly Commended. There's no doubt that the Ranger is competent and durable. but the product is let down by its rela tively low-tech engine, which could be forgive if it produced better economy.

The opposite approach is adopted by Toyoi with its D-4D common-rail engine. Despite having the lowest power output of the group its laden fuel consumption is over 30% better than the worst of its contemporaries without any desperate shortage of power. •
