REMOVAL CONTRACTOR John Dennis, currently serving a four-year jail sentence for his part in a £10rn bonded warehouse fraud, has had his 0-licence revoked and has been disqualified from holding a licence for two years.
However, a company formed to take over the Southampton business by a former employee has won a licence for 12 vehicles and eight trailers after promising Western Traffic Commissioner Philip Brown that Dennis would have nothing to do with it.
Traffic examiner Colin Tansley visited Dennis's premises last April and met Glen Pitchley, who had formed JD Transport to take over Dennis's removal business. For the company, Paul Carless said Pitchley was aware that if he did not take over the business he would be unemployed, as would 12 other staff.
Agreeing not to employ Dennis, Pitchley said:"I am not a front.just keeping the seat warm for when he is released."
He added that the same leased vehicles would be used and he was confident that he could operate the full complement.
The IC granted the licence on condition that Dennis is not employed in any capacity and the company changes its name within 12 months.
He ordered VOSA to carry out a maintenance investigation within six months.
